Trip to Ewenny Pottery

  • Brecknock Society and Museum Friends c/o Brecknock Museum, Captain’s Walk Brecon, Wales, LD3 7DS United Kingdom (map)

On Wednesday 6th May, the Brecknock Society will visit Ewenny Pottery, the oldest established pottery in Wales.  The earliest records of pottery making in Ewenny date back to 1427 and the village was once home to fifteen potteries, all exploiting locally available materials.
We will be accompanied by Gwyneth Evans, collector and historian of Ewenny pottery.  Gwyneth will give an illustrated talk describing the history of the pottery and introduce us to 8th generation potter Caitlin Jenkins, who will show us around her studio and explain the production processes. Continuing her family’s tradition, Caitlin creates wonderful functional pots for the home as well as all sorts of special commissions.  For a preview of pots made by Caitlin, see https://ewennypottery.com

After lunch at the Pottery Café, we will explore Ewenny Priory.  The Priory, now in the care of CADW, was founded in 1141 and is a fine example of Norman Romanesque architecture.  Alun Jenkins has very kindly offered to be our guide.  https://cadw.gov.wales/visit/places-to-visit/ewenni-priory

The cost for the day, including coach from Brecon, morning coffee and £5 deposit towards lunch, is £35 per person.  Names to Libby Rees libbyrees@gmail.com as soon as possible (deadline 20th April).
